 January 2022

* January 1 – France assumes the presidency of the European Union. (EU, France)

* January 1 – Eric Adams, a Democrat and former police captain, becomes Mayor of New York, the second African-American to become mayor of the city after David Dinkins in 1990. (USA)

* January 4 – The 24th OPEC and non-OPEC Ministerial meeting takes place via video-conference. (Global, Saudi Arabia)

* January 11 – The Centennial of the first treatment of diabetes with insulin. (Global)

February 2022:

February – Libya’s legislative elections, to help the country unify after the Second Libyan Civil War from 2014-2020, with a permanent ceasefire in October 2020 and Government of National Unity in March 2022. (OIC, Africa, Libya)

February 1 – China celebrates the Year of the Tiger, and also marks the deadline for TX2, a commitment by 13 countries in Asia and Russia to double the global population of tigers. (China, Global)

* February 4-20 – The 2022 Winter Olympics will be held in Beijing, China, making it the first city ever to host both the Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics. (China)

* February 21 – The 50th Anniversary of US President Richard Nixon’s to China, the first by a US President. (USA, China, Global)

* February 6 – Queen Elizabeth II of the UK will celebrate her Platinum Jubilee on this date, with public celebration in June, marking 70 years on the throne, a mark that no other British monarch before her has held. (UK)

February 28 – Egypt will celebrate 100 years of independence from the United Kingdom. (Egypt, UK)

March 2022:

March 9 – The 2022 South Korean Presidential Elections take place. (South Korea)

March 12 – The 75th Anniversary of the Truman Doctrine, whereby US President Harry Truman advocated and funded a new doctrine overturning the USA’s traditional reluctance to become entangled in events outside the West and assume a global leadership responsibility. (USA, Global)

March 27 – The 2022 Hong Kong Chief Executive election takes place. (Hong Kong, China)

March 31 – Argentina meets with the Paris Club, an informal group of 22 creditor nations, and the IMF, which gave it its biggest ever loan to the country at USD$57 billion, to discuss its public debt. (Global, Argentina)

April 2022:

* April 1 – The first day of Ramadan, the Islamic lunar month of fasting, starts, subject to new moon sighting. (Global, OIC, Saudi Arabia)

April – NASA’s Superbit, the next-generation space telescope that rides above the clouds on a balloon, is due to launch. (Global, USA)

* April 10 – The 2022 French presidential election takes place, where voters will decide whether to give incumbent French President Emmanuel Macron a second five-year term. (France)

* April 25 – May 8 – UN Biodiversity Conference Part 2, with world leaders to attend in Kunming, China. (Global, UN, China)

May 2022:

* May 1/2 – Last day of Ramadan, the Islamic lunar month of fasting and the first day of the Eid al-Fitr holidays, subject to new moon sighting (Global, OIC, Saudi Arabia)

May 26 – The 50th Anniversary of the Signing of the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty between the USA and the Soviet Union of Russia. (Global, USA, Russia)\

June 2022:

June – The public celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, a Jubilee celebrated for the first time in Britain’s history. (UK)

* June – The 92nd Annual General Meeting of the Bank for International Settlements set to take place in June2022. (Global)

* June – The World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting is scheduled to take place in early summer, postponed from January 2022 due to continued uncertainty of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. (Global, EU)

June 5 – The 75th Anniversary of the Marshall Plan, the US-plan to rebuild Europe in the aftermath of World War II. (USA, EU)

July 2022

July – Russia to launch Luna 25, the country’s first mission to the Moon’s surface in 46 years. (Global, Russia)

July 1 – The 25th Anniversary of the handover of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to China. (China, UK)

* July 7 – The Islamic pilgrimage of Hajj in Makkah, Saudi Arabia begins. (Global, Saudi Arabia)

* July 10 – The Eid al-Adha holiday to mark the end of Hajj for non-pilgrims starts. (Global, Saudi Arabia)

July 26 – The 75th Anniversary of US President Harry Truman signing the National Security Act, which created the National Security Council, the Department of Defense and the Central Intelligence Agency. (USA)

July 30 – The new Islamic Year of 1444 begins. (Global, Saudi Arabia)

August 2022:

August – NASA will launch a mission, which will take 3 and half years and a journey of 1.5 billion miles, to investigate Psyche, a metal-rich asteroid that could contain USD $10,000 quadrillion of iron alone. (Global, USA)

August 14 – Pakistan celebrate its platinum (75th) Independence Day. (Pakistan)

August 15 – India celebrate its platinum (75th) Independence Day. (India)

August 31 – The 25th anniversary of the death of Princess Diana. (UK)

September 2022:

September – NASA’s DART spacecraft is set to crash into a space rock to test new technologies to prevent a new asteroid from a collision with Earth. (Global, USA)

* September – China will host 14th BRICs summit, hosting Brazil, Russia and India. (BRICs, Global, China)

September 7 – Brazil will celebrate its bicentennial Independence. (Brazil)

* September 13-27 – The 77th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 77) will open on September 13 at the United Nations HQ in New York, USA, with the first day of the high-level General Debate will be September20. (UN, USA)

September 27 – The Bicentennial of the deciphering of the Rosetta Stone. (Global)

October 2022:

* October – The 20th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party will elect a new leadership of the Chinese Communist Party, where Xi Jinping is expected to seek an unprecedented third term as President of China. (China)

October 1 – Entrepreneur Elon Musk’s Space X commences a five year contract with the US Air Force, which will allow the U.S. military to use Space X’s Starship rocket to deliver weapons anywhere in the world in less than an hour. (Global, USA)

October 1 – The 75th Anniversary of US Airforce test pilot Chuck Yeager becoming the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound. (Global, USA)

October 2 – The 2022 Brazilian General Election takes place, with incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro seeking re-election. (Brazil)

* October 14-16 – The 2022 World Bank/ International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings takes place in Marrakech, Morocco. (Global, Morocco)

November 2022:

November – The world’s largest single-site solar farm becomes operational in Al-Dhafra, Abu Dhabi, UAE, to generate electricity for approximately 160,000 homes. (Global, UAE)

November 1 – The Centennial of the Abolition of the Ottoman Empire. (Global, OIC, Turkey)

* November 8 – The 2022 U.S. elections will select the 118th Congress with the mid-term elections seeing the Democrats seeking to retain their narrow control of the US Senate and House of Representatives. (USA)
